This is by no means an exhaustive listing of all the Nongovernmental Organizations across the globe.
Academy for Educational Development: An organization which does capacity building for individuals and communities on issues related to: Education, HIV/AIDS, Health, Environment/Energy, Education andLeadership and Democracy and Youth.
CARE: Engages in development work through humantarian assistance, self-help initiatives, economic sustainability, systems reforms, and policy change.
Christian Reformed World Relief Committee: Relief, education and development conducted by the Christian Reformed church in North America.
Counterpart International, Inc.: A NGO which utilizes a variety of tools to engage in civil society building, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance and food security programs. Main programs include: humanitarian assistance, environmental and natural resource management, nutrition, NGO institution building, small enterprise, and vocational training.
DPK Consulting: A consulting firm which prime holder of an IQC to improve government integrity and curb governmental corruption at both political and bureaucratic levels, focusing on anticorruption activities relating to rule of law, legislative oversight, and local government strengthening.
IFES: IFES is an international, nonprofit organization that supports the building of democratic societies. IFES also has an extensive research and publication section on their website. They also contribute to professionals working in democracy development, a publication called Democracy At Large.
Interaction: broad-based alliance of nongovernmental organizations in the United States. Wonderful resource to develop a beginning understanding of US-based NGO networks. You can find a listing a its US nongovernmental and voluntary organization members, here.
Mennonite Central Committee (MCC): faith-based organization which does a range of development and emergency relief activities across the globe. MCC is well-respected for their quality, community driven development. There are also opportunities for volunteer assignments through MCC.
TearFund: This is faith-based development organization which is close to my heart because of their commitment to faith-based NGOs in Sri Lanka. TearFund also works on various public policy initiatives which focus on issues such as climate change, trade justice, and the global poverty.
Opportunity International: Opportunity International’s mission is to provide opportunities for people in chronic poverty to transform their lives through small business and community development.
Oxfam America and Oxfam UK: Oxfam America is an international agency committed to developing lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and social injustice.
PACT: A development organization which has had some interesting project in the HIV/AIDs and Corporate Social Responsibility arenas.
PathFinder International: works to develop reproductive health as a basic human right.
World Vision: A international, faith-based development organization, whose influence is seen all over the world. This organization is close to my heart — the late Dr. Ted Engstrom, a fellow Taylor University alum led the organization for several years and my late grandfather, Benjamin Edward Fernando, initiated operations in Sri Lanka and was the first country director.
